Executive Summary:
This snapshot of Italy provides an in-depth examination of the legal, institutional, and policy frameworks governing migrant returns and readmissions in Italy. The snapshot contextualises Italy’s position as a primary entry point for migrants in the Mediterranean, driven by migratory pressures from North Africa and the Middle East. Over recent decades, Italy’s approach to migration management has evolved in response to changing patterns, domestic politics, and international pressures.
