Call for Papers: Workshop on Migrant Aspirations and New Models of Citizenship
The HIDDEN COST Action and GAPs Horizon Europe Project announce a workshop titled "Migrant Aspirations and New Models of Citizenship: A Changing Landscape," scheduled for 20 February 2025 at the University of Glasgow, in a collaboration facilitated by Susan Rottmann. This in-person event will explore the evolving dynamics of citizenship, belonging, and identification against the backdrop of contemporary global challenges, focusing on issues such as climate change, migration, and legal identity.
Workshop Overview: The workshop will bring together 8-10 participants for in-depth discussions on the complexities of citizenship and ID documentation, with particular emphasis on the global drive to ensure universal legal identity by 2030, as highlighted in SDG 16.9. Contributions will address barriers to ID access for migrants, the implications of state surveillance, and the roles of emotion, agency, and historical legacies in shaping modern citizenship models.
Submissions are encouraged from scholars across disciplines, including sociology, anthropology, political science, law, migration studies, and environmental studies. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of a peer-reviewed journal.
Key Themes for Submissions:
Citizenship as Legal and Emotional Membership: Exploration of how citizenship encompasses both legal status and emotional belonging, affecting migration decisions and resilience.
The Role of Identification in Everyday Life: Understanding the significance of ID in daily life, self-perceptions, and experiences of gaining or losing ID.
ID and Migrant Agency: Examining how migrants navigate and sometimes subvert ID regimes and policies, demonstrating agency and creativity.
Colonial Legacies and Contemporary Barriers: Investigating how historical legacies impact access to citizenship and the role of modern technologies in shaping legal identity.
Climate Change and Citizenship Models: Discussing how environmental challenges reshape the relationship between individuals, states, and emerging forms of citizenship.
Submission Guidelines: To apply, the application form must be completed by 15 November 2024. The form should include details of the proposed paper (title, 200-word abstract) and author information (name and affiliation). Notification of the selection results will be communicated within 10 days of the application deadline. Full papers of accepted presenters are due by 14 February 2025.

Limited travel funding and daily allowances for accommodation and meals are available on a competitive basis for participants joining the HIDDEN COST action.
