Hakan Ünay, GAPs Researcher at the Swedish Research Institute in Istanbul, prepared an analysis report for Migration Research Foundation, The analysis touches upon the increasingly stringent and diversified policies against migrants and migration, especially noticeable in the first quarter of the 21st century. With each passing year, these policies not only intensify but also expand and diversify with new explorations and strategies. This can be observed across all migration routes, regardless of the geography and whether they are densely or sparsely utilized by migrants. In a world increasingly enclosed by physical barriers, like walls and fences, and characterized by pushbacks and violent acts towards migrants, states are exploring innovative strategies to mitigate migrant entry, which can include the use of offshore detention facilities and the displacement to remote islands. The international approach to these issues, often lacking effective interventions, allows the normalization of such severe practices and potentially encourages the development of even more drastic and inhumane policies.
