CMR Webinar on International Lessons in Migrant Integration Practices in Poland
On September 2, 2024, Marta Pachocka (from the Horizon Europe GAPs team at the Centre of Migration Research of the University of Warsaw) co-organised and moderated the CMR webinar “International integration practices - lessons learned”. The aim of the event was to discuss international practices of migrant integration in countries with longer-standing and more extensive experience in migration governance than Poland. The webinar resulted from cooperation between the Laboratory of Urban and Regional Migration Policies & Migration Policies Research Unit at the Centre of Migration Research of the University of Warsaw (CMR UW), the Migration Academy of the Migration Consortium, the Union of Polish Metropolises, and the Research Committee 46 “Migration and Citizenship” of the International Political Science Association (IPSA). A key part of the event was dedicated to 15-minute speeches/interventions delivered by distinguished speakers from Europe and Canada:
● Professor Magdalena Nowicka, DeZIM German Centre for Integration and Migration Research, Berlin, Germany
● Dr Marie Jelínková, Assistant Professor, Department of Public and Social Policy, Faculty of Social Sciences, Charles University, Prague, Czechia
● Dr Melissa Moralli, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology and Business Law, University of Bologna, Italy
● Dr Vilde Hernes, Senior Researcher at OsloMet, Oslo, Norway
● Professor Jennifer Hyndman, Associate Vice-President for Research & Innovation, York University, Toronto, Canada
This was followed by a Q&A session between the speakers and audience on integration policies, practices, and tools in Germany, Czechia, Italy, Norway, Canada and Poland examined from the multilevel governance perspective, considering the needs of migrants with various legal statuses. Given the post-2022 forced migration from Ukraine to Poland and the challenges faced by Polish municipalities, it was helpful to examine the experiences of different countries in Europe and beyond, whose approaches to migration governance and migration/integration policies differ. Nonetheless, these countries' experiences constitute valuable inspiration for the processes taking place now in Poland. The meeting was recorded, and the recording is available on the CMR’s YouTube channel.
